Melville Terrace

A contemporary form inserted into a victorian garage

A previous architect had failed twice to get permission to build a dwelling on this site. Their approach of knocking down the garage to construct a two storey building was seen as too harmful to neighbouring amenity. Rather than trying to fit a new invasive building onto the site and then justify the its lack of impact on the constraining residential views, we worked with these constraints to lead and inform the design process. All neighbouring window's rights to light were mapped out in section and elevation, these constraints then informed the massing and form of structure that could be inserted into the garage - the result being a unique and contemporary 1st floor addition to the garage that allowed for a spacious dwelling within.
