Initially this plot seemed too challenging to provide  adequate space for a dwelling, how can one design a dwelling so long and narrow in a backland setting where heights are going to be restrained? The design solution was to break the dwelling down into 3 separate distinct forms - each of these reflecting the size and massing of near by domestic outbuildings. The result is a 90sqm house that has no more visual impact on the immediate local character than a collection of large outbuildings or garages. This break down of the layout in 3 forms also allows for a design that can give some separation to the 3 main users of the post covid home - sleep, live and work. Thus allowing a more positive psychological impact than a comparable dwelling where occupants live these 3 aspects of their lives in one small enclosed space.
